On the morning of August 10, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó.
The earthquake was felt across a large part of the country and affected communities in multiple departments, with particularly serious impacts reported in Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Quindío and Caldas.
Rescue operations and assessments continue.
Many travelers discover Colombia through its Caribbean coastline, mountains, national parks, historic cities, food and culture. But those of us fortunate enough to call this country home know that its greatest strength has always been its people.

Fundación Manos Visibles – SOS Chocó
Fundación Manos Visibles has worked for years strengthening communities, organizations and leadership throughout Colombia’s Pacific region.
Following the earthquake, the organization activated SOS Chocó, an emergency fundraising campaign supporting affected communities in Chocó.

UNICEF Colombia
UNICEF Colombia has activated an emergency appeal focused particularly on children and families affected by the earthquake, including access to water and sanitation, protection and continued education.

Cruz Roja Colombiana
The Colombian Red Cross has activated its emergency response capabilities following the earthquake and is supporting humanitarian response efforts in affected areas.
